The group was activated at Alconbury in December 1992 to replace the 39th SOW. The unit brought together the special forces elements, including the HC-130s and MH-53s which were previously stationed at Woodbridge with the MC-130s from Rhein Main, Germany. However the stay at Alconbury was comparatively short lived as the unit began moving the Mildenhall during the winter of 1994/spring of 1995.
